In the mission Wolves, Dogs, and Sons, John has a conversation with Jack where he tries to explain, to some extent, why he had to leave him and Abigail alone. John tells him that sometimes, if you start something, you have to finish it. Thirteen years ago, we didn’t have much context for this, but now we know he was referring to having "started" dismantling his old gang by killing Micah in 1907 and being forced to "finish it" by confronting the remaining members.
