John Milton's brief epic is noteworthy for its stylistic differences from Paradise Lost, including its choice of subject matter: Christ's temptation in the wilderness.
While the passive obedience of Christ on the cross is central to Milton's portrait of the atonement, the Puritan Milton's stress of the importance of the active obedience of Christ is vital for a Christian culture, an era of great neglect at least for the past century. In the Son of God's active obedience to the Father in the face of all temptation by Satan, he doesn't persuade the reader (or himself) that he is God, he persuades Satan himself.
Therein he, as the second Adam, and in his offices of munus triplex, restores Paradise.
