On July 16, 1957 US Air Force officer John Glenn completed the first supersonic transcontinental flight across America. Riding in a Vought F8U-1 Crusader fighter jet, Glenn flew from Los Alamitos Army Airfield in Orange County, CA to Floyd Bennett Field in New York. He set a record by completing the trip in 3 hours, 23 minutes and 8.3 seconds, while also becoming the first man to take a panoramic picture of the US. Glenn's next aeronautical feat occurred in 1962 when he became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth.
