John Allen is without doubt one of world’s great textile designers. Now approaching his 91st year (in 2025) he is equally at home working with the weavers of Tibet, the luxury brand Loewe or as an educationalist. Allen’s latest collection of bespoke, stunning and joyful wall carpets, called John Allen - Woven England, was premiered at Goldmark Gallery in October 2023. goldmarkart.com
This Goldmark Films production, itself titled John Allen - Woven England, filmed at the designer’s marvellous and eccentric London home, almost defies the viewer not to fall in love with the man. He has had three major heart attacks and comments: “Every carpet is a bonus because I’m on borrowed time … every moment of every day is really important. So I am going to jolly well enjoy them”.
