Funerals and Wakes in Ballygarrett and Kilmuckridge

Here is a recording that I spent 3 hours looking for today and so glad I found it. It is an interview I did with undertaker and publican Joe Hammel from Kilmuckridge that I did back in March 2019.

I’m editing up the long interview now but said I’d share this short bit with you as only on Sunday I posted about a funeral custom from Ballygarrett and Kilmuckridge and here is Joe telling me all about it!

If you lucky to have a few bob, you had a High Mass, however for the poorer person - you got a local man to recite the prayers in Latin at your funeral and in this case it was Johnny Downey from Kilmuckridge and Johnny Sinnott from Parkannesley, Ballygarrett who did it. These accounts from Joe are gold and I’ll share the full recordings when I get it edited.
