The US president, Joe Biden, said during a briefing at the White House that evacuation orders for Floridians were a matter of 'life and death' as Hurricane Milton barrels towards the state.

The president cancelled his trips to Germany and Angola because of the storm, which he said 'could be one of the worst storms in 100 years' to hit Florida. Hundreds of thousands of Floridians, heeding urgent warnings from authorities to flee while they still had the opportunity, were caught up in the tailbacks as they headed inland to safety. Evacuees filled hotel rooms and emergency shelters set up in Gulf Coast counties. The region is still reeling form Helene, which hit the south-eastern US just over a week ago, killing at least 227 people
