In this video, I review Jeanne la pucelle (1994), Rivette's epic two-part portrait of Joan of Arc, newly released as a Limited Edition Blu-ray from Radiance Films. Starring an extraordinary Sandrine Bonnaire, the film strips away much of the legend to present Joan as something more immediate and human, following her journey from an unknown peasant girl through military triumph, capture and eventual imprisonment.
Presented across Les batailles (The Battles) and Les prisons (The Prisons), this is an ambitious, absorbing and refreshingly grounded interpretation of one of history's most enduring figures.
