For this new episode of [SESSIONS], we invited critically acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Joan As Police Woman to play the title track of her latest album 'Lemon, Limes and Orchids', out on Play It Again Sam.
We loved this song from the first listen; the lyrical poetry, the story telling and a breathtaking display of Joan's soulful voice in its full, transformative glory.
Joan on ‘Lemons, Limes and Orchids’:
“Before cell phones and perpetual connectivity, I would wander NYC and purposely get lost. At that time, there were large swaths of NYC that had not been developed. I could be the only person on the street for blocks. I guess it was a form of meditation but I didn’t know to call it that then. I could sink into my sadness and allow the city to eventually revive me. I give thanks to my city for always reviving me. I am sure it wasn’t easy.“

20 years ago Nouvelle Vague released its iconic self-titled debut album which marked the rise of a musical style fusing post-punk with a distinctive touch of bossa nova and melancholia. Two decades later, they are a global phenomenon touring the world in celebration of their 20th anniversary!
Following the release of Nouvelle Vague’s Deluxe Edition of the 2024 album Should I Stay or Should I Go?, we proudly share this striking version of the Depeche Mode classic for a new episode of [SESSIONS].
“I have been a big fan of Depeche Mode since the day I saw the video for ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ on French TV in 1981! We have already covered 2 Depeche Mode songs but ‘People Are People’ is special to me and I had this idea to arrange it in a kind of post rock way, to transform the almost industrial 80’s s sound into something more trippy. I also liked playing with the duality of the 2 performers.” – Nouvelle Vague’s Marc Collin
