JMAP only replaces the IMAP part of email (not server-to-server), but here's the key: it's a published internet standard (RFC 8620/8621) that anyone can implement. Instead of learning ancient protocols like IMAP and CalDAV, JMAP uses HTTP and JSONβtools every programmer already knows. It's not a walled garden: there are already JMAP clients on iOS and Android stores, other people have built JMAP servers, and anyone can download the specs and build their own 'gardens that all connect up beautifully.'
