The German town of Jülich and its surroundings are very interesting to stroll around.
There is the citadel of Jülich which is one of the best preserved fortresses in Germany and a textbook example of Italian High Renaissance north of the Alps. The citadel was built in the 16th century.
Outside Jülich you can find beautiful nature with the Roer as the most important river.
In stark contrast with all this we can find the lignite pits. They are actively dug so that this coal can feed their power plants to generate electricity.
Impressive to see, but at the same time deeply saddening that entire pieces of nature and villages have to make way for this.
