Jimmie Vaughan speaks of Hendrix, Steve Miller, Etta James, Crossroads, child-birth, genre-loathing, hot-rods, Honolulu and most importantly new music to Andy Rawll for Record Collector Magazine.
Eight years after his last studio album, this legendary Texan musician releases a new collection of songs from the Great American Blues Songbook entitled 'Baby, Please Come Home', available from 17th May 2019 on the Last Music Company label.
In this exclusive pre-show interview, Jimmie reveals the background to recording the third in a sequence of covers albums (following 2010's 'Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites' and its 2011 sequel). He reveals the inspiration for the eclectic choice of songs, from Jimmy Reed to T-Bone Walker and Fats Domino, delivered in the uncluttered and authentic style that has won Jimmie plaudits, awards and a retinue of the finest musicians keen to collaborate with him.
He talks about the surprising pick of Etta James' 'Be my lovey dovey' on the record, as well as stories about his long and distinguished career, setting the record straight about the time that Jimi Hendrix asked to buy Jimmie's wah-pedal.
The release date comes at the end of a week in London that began with a triumphant trio of shows at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, where Jimmie and band supported Eric Clapton and he joined his longstanding friend for a fiery encore of Bo Diddley's 'Before you accuse me'. Indeed, Jimmie's connection with Clapton extends back many years, through many mutual friends and musicians, including Eric's longstanding tour guitarist, Doyle Bramhall II.
Doyle's father was a high school contemporary of Vaughan the elder and they played together (with DB as drummer) in one of his first bands, The Chessmen. They were such close friends that Jimmie reveals that he was present when Doyle's son was born and eventually welcomed the 18-year-old 'Little' Doyle as guitarist in his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds (1988-1989). In a familial twist, during the 70s, 'Big' Doyle had recruited Jimmie's younger brother Stevie, to the band he formed with Marc Benno, The Nightcrawlers.
To coincide with the album release date, Jimmie played a headline show a Camden Dingwalls in North London on 17May19 before returning to the US for a series of promotional shows in Austin that precede an extensive solo tour (and some further dates supporting EC) including the appeal of a pair of shows in Honolulu.
Jimmie also reunites with Eric in September at the Crossroads fundraising event, that conveniently for the Austin-based man, is taking place this year just a few hours drive up the road in Dallas.
