Was the Protestant Reformation a good or bad thing? What caused the Protestant Reformation? How has the Protestant Reformation impacted the world? Why did the Protestant Reformation happen? What caused the Protestant Reformation to protest the Roman Catholic Church? Protestants protested indulgences, taking a stand for justification by faith alone, Sola Scriptura and rejected the Magisterium authority claims, and rejected the Papacy. In 1054 AD the Orthodox Church split from the Roman Catholic Church (first Protestants) because of Papal supremacy ie one Pope in an infallible authority over the church, and because of the Holy Spirit ie the Filioque. Orthodox believers believe the Holy Spirit only proceeds from the Father, whereas Roman Catholics and Protestants believe the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son, ie the Filioque. There are other areas of differences among Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants.
