Cmaj7 | Jian'er Zhu - Lantern Festival (1999/2004) @Cmaj7 | Uploaded February 2021 | Updated October 2024, 18 hours ago.
Composer: Jian'er Zhu (朱践耳 Zhū Jiàn'ěr) (October 18, 1922 – August 15, 2017)
Orchestra: Shanghai Symphony Orchestra conducted by Xieyang Chen
Based on Chaozhou music from the coast of the East China Sea and Yi music from the mountains of southwest China, this is a brilliantly fun piece evocative of wild festivities. Arranged rather symmetrically, it begins and ends with a grand slightly menacing theme that is quick to fall over on itself. Padding this theme are absolutely exhilarating percussion solis at 0:34 and 7:28. Forming the next section is use of the full orchestra in a similarly percussive manner, together with a delightful scherzando theme (I particularly love the string glisses at 1:28). The next section consists of a soft lilting woodwind and string melody interrupted by a rude staccato theme in muted trumpets and horns. The center of the piece is a beautiful free section at 4:20, strongly evocative of a mountain landscape, that leads into an expanded mirror of the first half of the piece.
(4:58 rather reminded of youtu.be/t1O7LpOTBfM?t=2000 from Genshin, actually also recorded by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra)
