Jharkhand’s protesting students scored a major victory last night. But while one group celebrated, another spent the night outside the Assembly fearing that the government jobs they had already secured could now disappear.
The Hemant Soren government has agreed to cancel the JSSC-CGL exam and all recruitment exams conducted through private agency TDPL, meeting one of the protesters’ biggest demands.
But that decision creates a new problem.
In December 2025, Soren handed appointment letters to 1,910 candidates selected through JSSC-CGL. Many have already joined government departments. Now, the very examination through which they were recruited stands cancelled.
And the impact may go much further. Around 15 major JPSC and JSSC examinations have reportedly been conducted through TDPL, potentially involving recruitment across multiple departments and cadres.
The question now is what happens to candidates who cleared these exams genuinely, without any involvement in alleged leaks or manipulation. Will they lose their jobs? Will they have to sit for the exams again? And what happens to those who may no longer meet the age criteria?
The cancellations may be a major win for protesters demanding accountability. But for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of already-selected candidates, the uncertainty has only just begun.
