One of the biggest differences between Catholics and Protestants is the interpretation of John 6. Was Jesus speaking figuratively or literally?
When we examine Jesus’s words more closely, we see that He is speaking both symbolically and literally. In the first half of the Bread of Life Discourse, the Greek word "esthiō" is used. But a few verses later, Jesus uses the word "trōgō," which means “to gnaw” or “chew.”
This marked a turning point in John 6, because after Jesus used this word and reiterated His teaching, “many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him.”
If Jesus were only speaking symbolically, His disciples would not have left Him.
