Recorded with her all-female quartet, The Little Lucy Smith Singers, this number dates from 1955.
Once Chicago's premier organist, second only to stepmother Roberta Martin as pianist, and one of my favorite voices of Gospel's Golden Age, the formidably talented Lucy Smith made her national debut and greatest musical contributions as organist and vocalist for the legendary Roberta Martin Singers.
A natural soprano with a dynamic, bright, nasal intensity and wide range, we find Lucy tackling this heavy tune at age 31 with all the searing emotive prowess of a seasoned church mother. Listen for the pleading cry of Sarah McKissick. It's Chicago gospel at its finest.
