Biola students: Conference credit is only available by attending in-person.
We want our spiritual walks to be a straight line, but oftentimes they are more of a zigzag. We wish to plan out our lives – or at least know what lies ahead – but we can’t see that far. Sometimes God transforms us instantly through a worship night or conversation, but most of the time becoming like Jesus takes time, intentionality, and patience.
Continuing our walk through Philippians, Torrey Conference 2022 dives into Philippians 2:12-13: Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
A few questions arise about the spiritual growth (salvation) process in these verses:
- What is my part in spiritual growth (work out)?
- What is God’s part (works in)?
- How does this all work together?
The main goal of TC22 is to explore how we work out our salvation while God works in us through three main avenues of spiritual growth:
- Spiritual practices
- Story
- Suffering
Each session will unpack the importance of these three S’s.

Dr. Carmen Imes is an associate professor of Old Testament at Biola, and brings a passion for helping students and other laypeople engage the Old Testament, and discover its relevance for Christian identity and mission. Since the release of her book, Bearing Gods Name: Why Sinai Still Matters (IVP 2019), Imes has appeared on more than 50 podcasts and radio shows and launched her own YouTube channel where she releases weekly Torah Tuesday videos. She is a guest blogger for Christianity Today, The Political Theology Network, and The Well (InterVarsitys blog for women in the academy and professions). Imes is also a frequent speaker at churches, conferences and retreats. Before earning her Ph.D. from Wheaton College, Carmen and her husband served as missionaries in the Philippines with SIM International, reaching out to ethnic minorities. Imes loves introducing students to the rich insights of the global church.

For All Seasons began as a group of friends in college that started a band with a shared passion for serving Jesus, making music and using their gifts to serve others. They write songs from their personal stories, placing an emphasis on fusing biblical truth with the passionate expression of original music. 10 years and six records later, the heart is still the same: to lead you in authentic worship and encourage you to worship God with honesty and surrender — because a genuine encounter with the living God will truly change your life forever!

Dr. Ed Stetzer is the new dean of Talbot School of Theology, starting in July, 2023. Dr. Stetzer hosts a weekly radio program, Ed Stetzer Live, the Church Leaders Podcast, speaks widely on areas of Christian mission and contemporary culture, is the Scholar in Residence at Mariner Church, Irvine, California and is the author of numerous books, including his most recent, Christians in an Age of Outrage. He has a background as a church planter and holds a Doctorate in Missiology from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
