Jen Hughes is a senior federal government leader committed to elevating arts, culture, and design as integral to the wellbeing of communities and individuals.
Trained as an urban planner, she is a firm believer in the transformative power of the arts to build thriving places, strengthen civic engagement, and foster meaningful connection.
Most recently, Jen served as the Senior Advisor for Partnerships, Expansion, and Innovation at the National Endowment for the Arts. In this role, she led new initiatives and partnerships across the federal government and philanthropy to extend the impact of NEA. Recent partnerships included “Healing, Bridging, Thriving: A Summit on Arts and Culture in Our Communities” co-hosted by the White House and NEA, the first-ever EPA artist-in-residence program, and a grant initiative for projects at the intersection of arts and health. Previously, she served as the director of design and creative placemaking, managing a $7 million grant portfolio, including programs such as Our Town, Mayors’ Institute on City Design, and Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design.
Prior to NEA, she served as a Capital City fellow with the government of DC. She received a bachelor of science in economics from the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania and a master of city planning from University of California, Berkeley.
