I spoke with filmmaker Jennifer Greenstreet about her new documentary 'May Contain: My Life', a film that aims to confront the life-or-death realities faced by millions of Americans living with food allergies. In our conversation, I share my parallel allergies to cats and being lactose intolerance, allowing me to empathize with the children featured.
Written, produced and directed by Greenstreet, a former attorney, the documentary explores the difficult balance between staying safe and fitting in while managing a chronic food allergy. Through the experiences of Giles, Owen, Catherine, Hannah, Anna and Riya, the film highlights the daily fears, challenges and triumphs shared by an estimated 33 million Americans with food allergies.
'May Contain: My Life'also follows the stories of mothers and advocates Mandi Kearns, Dina Hawthorne and Dr. Ruchi Gupta, whose personal experiences have fueled efforts to increase awareness and improve public safety. Hawthorne’s advocacy following the death of her son contributed to the passage of Elijah’s Law, while Gupta offers the perspective of both a medical expert and a parent navigating food allergies firsthand.
Former NFL running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis narrates the film and serves as its spokesperson. Bettis, who also lives with a food allergy, brings additional visibility to the issue through his advocacy work. The documentary also features appearances by Disney actors August Maturo and Ava Kolker.
Greenstreet is the founder and CEO of Just Like You Films, an Oscar-qualified, Emmy- and Webby-winning nonprofit production company focused on socially impactful storytelling. A former prosecuting attorney, Greenstreet transitioned into filmmaking nearly two decades ago and has produced 15 award-winning films exploring issues including disability, mental health and inclusion. Her work has appeared on CNN, been profiled in The Hollywood Reporter and screened at the United Nations.
Greenstreet’s recent projects have also expanded into immersive storytelling. Her latest virtual reality film centered on food allergies was selected for the NewImages Festival in Paris, reflecting her continued focus on character-driven stories with global impact.
