This new video series from the UCLA College, “Silly Questions, Smart Bruins,” spotlights graduate students sharing their academic expertise through a lighthearted lens.
Inspired by the release of “The Little Mermaid,” this first installment features Hayden Speck, a triple Bruin who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history in 2015, a bachelor's degree in biology in 2015 and a master’s degree in biology in 2018. Speck is currently a doctoral candidate in the UCLA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
In the video, he illuminates his research by imagining what surprising use mermaids might make of jellyfish, the problems jellies might pose to Disney animators, and whether or not he’d make a deal with a certain sea witch to become a jellyfish himself.
