Stygian Dogs | Jeff Shanks! Nemedian Scholar and 'Conan's Compatriot'! @StygianDogs | Uploaded June 2024 | Updated October 2024, 8 hours ago.
Hey you Stygian Dogs!
What follows is a conversation that I’d been greatly anticipating. And with ‘Howard Days’ just around the corner, it was all the more auspicious.
If you’re a regular reader of the monthly ‘Conan the Barbarian' series from Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures - or watch my reviews of the aforementioned - you’ll be well aware of Jeffrey Shanks, whose essays have appeared in each issue of the series, including the two Free Comic Book Day issues. It’s my observation that - especially early in the series relaunch - Shanks’ essays did a lot to fortify Jim Zub’s bold creative choices, adding context and rationale to the story-telling. To me, they’re a must read, full of excellent reference information, while being especially welcoming to those who are newer to Conan and Robert E . Howard.
We start by talking about Jeff’s day job as an archeologist, his journey into Howard scholarship and his relationship with Heroic Signatures - one that will now include Comic Writing credits in 'The Savage Sword of Conan' #4. We go deep into Howard Days…veer into the world of early fanzines, he tells us about the Holy Grail for Howard collectors, his archeological dig at the Howard House - and SO MUCH MORE!
I hope you enjoy this conversation with Conan Compatriot - and Nemedian Scholar - Jeffrey Shanks!
