In ‘Asbestos’, Jean-Michel Basquiat depicts a great historical and cultural archetype — the fisherman — with his trademark crown of thorns.

An enduring symbol of spiritual renewal, similar figures appear in some of Basquiat‘s greatest works, including ‘Untitled’ (1982), in the collection of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and 'Water Worshiper' (1984).
