Jean Alicia Elster is a former attorney and acclaimed author of intergenerational stories that center Black families, history, and resilience. A 2017 Kresge Artist Fellow in Literary Arts, she is the author of How It Happens, a powerful young adult novel based on the lives of three generations of women in her own family. Through themes of race, identity, and perseverance, Elster invites readers to explore how personal history and societal change intertwine. Her work has received multiple honors and has been featured in national outlets including Ms. and World Vision.
