Is JD Vance mistaking the online right for the Republican electorate?
In this clip from my conversation with David Reaboi, I discuss Vice President JD Vance’s approach to the growing ideological divisions on the American right. I contrast Vance’s message at Turning Point USA with Ben Shapiro’s argument that a political movement needs boundaries—and that open antisemites, racists and other extremists should be excluded from the conservative coalition.
I argue that Vance’s desire to keep everyone inside his political “tent” makes it difficult to draw meaningful ideological lines. And because so much of the political conversation he encounters takes place online, particularly on X, I question whether Vance is mistaking the views of right-wing influencers and social-media personalities for those of Republican voters more broadly.
