In this video I explore the use of the augmented nonatonic scale (A.K.A. Messiaen's Third Mode of Limited Transposition A.K.A. augmented triad with chromatic neighbors) in jazz. This is a very deep topic, and I barely scratch the surface here, but hopefully it will spark some creativity. I was exposed to this scale through the music of tenor saxophonist and composer Gary Thomas (sideman to Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock), who uses symmetrical scales extensively.
