Javier Bardem is sharing a simple message from the Oscars stage: “No to war and free Palestine.”
The “No Country for Old Men” actor presented the International Feature Film category at Sunday’s Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
Before reading his prepared remarks, Bardem delivered his brief anti-war call to action to applause from the audience.
The 57-year-old performer sported a pin with the Spanish words, “No a la guerra,” meaning “no to war.”
Bardem explained on the red carpet ahead of the awards show that it was the same pin he wore in 2003 to protest the war in Iraq. This time, he said, he chose to wear it to speak out against the U.S. and Israel’s strikes on Iran.
“Here we are 23 years after, again with another illegal war created by [President Trump] and [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu] and creating a lot of damage and a lot of innocents being killed and bombed,” Bardem told The Wrap.
Another badge he was wearing, he said, represented “the resistance of the Palestine people with the handala — which is a symbol of a 10-year-old boy who was drawn in 1969 by a Palestinian saying until he goes back to his homeland, he won’t grow.”
