On this week's Technique Tuesday, US national team member and Missouri's Jarrett Jacques — owner of one of the best head pinches in the country — breaks down what to do when your opponent shoots in on your legs. It all starts with one idea most young guys get wrong: don't force a head pinch or chest wrap just because it's freestyle. A takedown is worth the same two points, so take the easy score first, then hit the big move when it's actually there.
From the front headlock — Jarrett calls it "mantis" — he shows the simple go-behind: slam the elbow to the mat and run the corner for an easy takedown. Then he builds up to his personal favorite, the chest wrap from a normal front headlock, and finishes with the chest wrap when a guy is already in on your single leg.
Get your easy points first. Save the highlight reel for when he hands it to you.
You'll learn:
- The go-behind from mantis — side step, slam his elbow to the mat, hand to your belly button, catch the armpit, and run the corner chasing ankle or hamstring
- Why a takedown beats forcing it — two points is two points, so stop reaching for the flashy finish
- The chest wrap from the front headlock — lock elbows tight, and when he pushes down like a push-up, scoop his tricep up with your forearm
- The detail that makes it work — let your lock shift from the center of his chest to his armpit so his arm goes straight, then slide your knee between his shoulder and ear
- The chest wrap off his single leg — baseline sprawl, step the leg up to punch your arm deep, lock over your pinky in the far armpit, and forearm his arm over his head before the baseball slide
Score the easy two first. The chest wrap is there when he gives it to you.
