U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz decisively turned back a progressive primary challenge Tuesday, while former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer emerged from a crowded Republican field, setting up a closely watched November showdown in Florida’s newly drawn and more Republican-friendly 25th Congressional District.
Moskowitz defeated union organizer and democratic socialist Oliver Larkin by a wide margin to secure the Democratic nomination, while Singer won a five-way GOP primary. The victories send the two candidates into a general-election contest in a district redrawn this year as part of a Republican effort to strengthen the party’s chances of holding its U.S. House majority.
The new district stretches along South Florida’s coast through portions of Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Moskowitz is seeking reelection there even though redistricting placed his home in the newly configured 22nd District. AP has identified both districts as seats Donald Trump won comfortably, underscoring the tougher political terrain Moskowitz faces in November.
