Before Genki Sushi and Sushiro became everywhere in Singapore, many Singaporeans had one OG sushi chain they grew up with - Sakae Sushi. The frog logo, the conveyor belt, the coloured plates… for many people in Singapore, this was probably one of their first experiences with Japanese food.
But as a Japanese person, I wanted to find out: is Sakae Sushi actually good Japanese food? Or is it more like Singapore’s own nostalgic version of Japanese food from the 1990s?
In this video, I visit Sakae Sushi at Katong, try the food from a Japanese POV, and explore why this chain became so popular in Singapore. After that, I also check out a Katong heritage spot - Chin Mee Chin Confectionery, a nostalgic kopitiam/confectionery that has been around since 1925.
