The Japanese Air Headquarters Building on Peleliu. This building is one of the most historically significant buildings on Peleliu and is one of the most visited by tourist. For the Japanese it was the command and control center for the airfield and operations. During the Marines assault on the airfield on September 16, 1944 it was a Japanese strong point in their defenses. The building was heavily damaged during the preinvasion bombardment. After the Marines secured the airfield the 1st Marine Division took over the building as their divisional command post. Later in the Battle of Peleliu the Army's 81st Infantry Division also used the building as their command post.
