Janet, along with her friend Melanie, was inspired to write the song after talking about how Melanie wasn't sure if she really wanted to have sex with her boyfriend. Janet advised him to wait a while, and after that talk he was inspired to write it. "Let's Wait Awhile" had great "similarities" with the song "Daisy Jane" (1975) by the band America. A U.S. road manager, hearing "Let's Wait A While" on a car radio in 1987, reportedly stopped at a phone booth to alert Gerry Beckley of the "obvious similarity" to the Janet song with Beckley's composition. Beckley eventually reached an out-of-court settlement with Janet, Jam and Lewis, thus preempting plagiarism litigation.
