peter pan 2 was one of those vhs tapes i had as a child that i watched over and over and over again and while part of it was due to the really good action sequences and worldbuilding i always come back to jane’s character. (definitely not because of peter i always thought he was obnoxious and overrated) she’s just a kid who’s put so much pressure on herself, some of it because she feels compelled to be responsible and some of it from the trauma of growing up during a world war forces her to be that way
also i feel like she’s underexplored in trans disney editing? whole books have been written about peter as a trans narrative (this piece goes into it more in depth austinchant.com/2017/12/06/peter-pan-as-a-trans-metaphor but a lot comes down to trans people not wanting to grow up (into the wrong gender) + being told its just a phase and they’ll grow up eventually) and i think jane’s sense of obligation to grow up too fast makes it so interesting to let her be in a non-traumatizing world surrounded by like-minded people and for her to realize she doesn’t want to grow up to be a girl
so this video is an extended metaphor about how i see her narrative and why i think she's such an evocative character. also the original end for this video was going to have a crossover with jim from treasure planet in the second half? and they have a touching discussion about gender and he encourages jane to pursue transness more. HOWEVER this contest is about just your favorite character and i decided that would be out of the scope + take WAY too long.
eventually i would like to expand on this video + make more like it (also, let me know what disney characters you see as trans in the comments? i’ve been thinking of doing a compilation video to comeback by crj and im open to ideas)
ANYWAYS i hope you all like it it’s kind of a complex interpretation + it makes me feel like i’m a food network contestant trying to make the judges root for me with a sad backstory but it’s really not. mostly i’m glad this contest made me get my ass in gear with this project and i appreciate how much disney communities have motivated me to try new things
