Welcome to my first Jane Austen July vlog! I ended up reading some great books this week and wanted to share my reading experiences with you. I also got some more surprise book mail (I still can’t believe it) AND made an apple tart inspired by a recipe from the mid-1700s! Are you reading anything for Jane Austen July?

*BUTTERED APPLE TART*
(inspired by Hannah Glasse's recipe from 1747!)
Ingredients:
- 4-5 apples
- 2tbsp butter
- 2-4 tbsp sugar (I used 6 tbsp brown sugar)
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg (I used 1/2 tsp allspice)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon (I used 1.5 tsp)
- Juice and zest of one orange (or lemon)
- 3 eggs, separated
- icing sugar to serve (optional)
- pie crust
Instructions:
- cook pealed and sliced apples in one tbsp of water until soft on medium-high heat
- on low-medium heat, add butter, sugar, spices, zest, juice, mix and set aside to cool
- beat egg yolks, stir into apple mixture
- beat egg whites to stiff peaks, fold into apple mixture
- pour apple mixture into pie crust and bake for 30-40 minutes until the eggs are set at 375 C.
