This video is an internal memo for all the parties involved in the Magnacut decarburization discovery process (see email chain). It was at this point Guy realized he was on his own to to deal with this entire situation. The decarburization turned out to be unintentionally occurring during a stress relieving process that Peters' Heat Treating was performing. They incorporated this as a standard process in an attempt to minimize aggressive part distortion they were encountering during the hardening process, we believe due to material strain caused during the production of the steel and suboptimal annealing temperatures.
Because of their higher pressure quench to achieve the best possible conversion, material inconsistencies are especially highlighted, due to the rapid change in the materials' structure during hardening. This had been going on for awhile before our parts were affected. Peters' had been sharing feedback with Niagara and Crucible as they were seeing things, yet nobody who developed these materials seemed to understand this possibility or what was occurring, using a fairly industry standard process used for many grades. According to the published data sheets, Peters' was doing nothing wrong and even now there is no indication of this on their published data sheet.
We find this especially confusing because Peters' Heat Treating was, according to Larrin Thomas, intimately involved in the development of this steel, so we're not sure why this wasn't discovered ahead of these materials being released to the public. To be very clear, we did not in any way ask for a stress relieve as part of our processing
We are releasing this video now in the spirit of full transparency and to spread public awareness, so that others might avoid these situations.
