Jamie begins with the Government’s decision to provide the morning-after pill to very young teenagers without their parents ever being told. For him, the problem is not just one policy but the worldview behind it. Britain is now, in his words, “technically called a secular society. But in every secular society, the government itself becomes God.” The state is effectively saying: “We will decide what they can do and cannot do, and we’ll do so based off of our own whims and no higher standard, even the standard of the family itself.”
Sex, he notes, “has become a leisure activity” when for most of history “everybody knew that this thing produced babies and that was the primary purpose of it”. No-fault divorce, promiscuity and the legal redefinition of marriage are part of the same story. Speaking of societal taboos against premarital sex, he says: “We disposed with all of those long before we got to same-sex marriage”, and the result is a culture that tells people sex is “just about liking someone, just about consent, no more than that.” Research backs up his warning. A 2023 paper in the Journal of Family Issues found that divorce risk is lowest for those with no premarital partners and significantly higher for those with multiple partners. The Institute for Family Studies reaches the same conclusion: that saving sex for marriage is the least risky route to a stable marriage.
Jamie then makes an unapologetically positive case for man-woman marriage, especially for children. The state should be “very interested in the institution of marriage” because “there is just no doubt whatsoever that the best environment in which to raise children is in that environment of their natural birth parents”. The Government should be invested in men and women making a lifelong commitment to stay together and raise their children together.
Decades of research support this too. A review in The Linacre Quarterly finds that children living with their married, biological parents generally do better physically, emotionally and academically than those in other family forms. A UK study using Millennium Cohort data shows that children in married biological families have fewer behaviour problems than those in cohabiting or stepfamilies.
Jamie also challenges church leaders who hide behind the claim that marriage, life and gender are ‘political’ and so must be avoided. “Yeah, I think it’s a cop-out”, he says. Churches that refuse to speak into law and public policy are, in his words, effectively saying “that Jesus is not King of kings”. Silence is not neutrality; it is surrender, he concludes.
