James Monroe was the last veteran of the Revolutionary War to serve as president, earning him the nickname "the Last Cocked Hat." James Monroe began his presidency by touring the United States because the White House was still being rebuilt after the War of 1812. During his first term, political strife seemingly disappeared and Monroe was nearly unanimously elected to a second term winning the electoral college by a vote of 231-1!
