The 28th Annual James Madison Lecture
The 29th Annual James Madison Lecture featured bestselling author Nathaniel Philbrick. The Foundation’s Senior Advisory Consultant, Dr. Jeffry Morrison sat down with Mr. Philbrick to discuss the legacy of the American Revolution, the importance of George Washington, and the third book in his American Revolution trilogy, In the Hurricane’s Eye: The Genius of George Washington and the Victory at Yorktown (2018).
Dr. Morrison and Mr. Philbrick discussed the importance of George Washington to the American Revolution, and more specifically his role as commander of the American forces in the Revolution, his character, and his political successes in the early years of the republic. Washington’s role in each facet of his public life was fortuitous for the new country, especially serving as its new President. Philbrick points out that part of the role of President was to connect with the people, and Washington decided to tour the country (not an easy feat in the late 18th century) to further connect the office – and himself – to the nation.
