Beginning in the late 1960s, producer-writer James L. Brooks helped push television comedy in a new direction that reflected society, tackled social issues through heartfelt storytelling, and celebrated diversity and strong female characters. From creating the groundbreaking series Room 222 in 1969 to co-creating the Peabody-winning Mary Tyler Moore Show (and its spinoffs Rhoda and Lou Grant), Brooks became a major player in the TV revolution of the 1970s alongside Norman Lear. He also went on to co-create TV classics and favorites like Taxi and The Simpsons.
For both his visionary works that pulled us into what was next and his lasting drive to mentor new talent, Peabody proudly recognizes James L. Brooks with the inaugural Peabody Industry Icon Award.
