This video is a play-through of James Jamerson's bassline from 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine', a classic Motown song that has been recorded by a number of different artists. This song has a fantastic bassline, one that offers a valuable insight into his innovative playing style.
I recorded this line using a Fender Custom Shop '67 Precision bass strung with flatwound strings and set with a high action. Foam was inserted beneath the bridge plate and the tone control was rolled most of the way off. The bass was recorded via a SansAmp Bass Driver DI, all controls set flat. A small amount of compression was added digitally.
