This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the railway and we're marking it by honouring GWR’s first ever locomotive driver.
We welcomed Swindon South MP, Heidi Alexander and Leader of Swindon Borough Council, Jim Robbins to unveil a blue plaque honouring James Hurst, who drove the first Vulcan locomotive for GWR on 28 December 1837.
A lifelong railway pioneer, and this plaque marks the house he called home in the heart of Swindon’s historical Railway Village.
