The World Health Organization recommends 10 intensive care beds per 100,000 people. For Jamaica's population, that would mean approximately 280 ICU beds.
Instead, the public health system has approximately 43 functional ICU beds.
And the problem doesn't stop with the number of beds.
Kingston Public Hospital has only a handful of functioning ICU spaces. Victoria Jubilee Hospital has just two ICU beds. Hospitals across the island are forced to rely on high dependency units and other spaces to manage critically ill patients.
But who gets the available ICU bed?
Doctors explain how patients are assessed based on their likelihood of survival, the reversibility of their condition and whether intensive care is actually in their best interest.
It's a decision no doctor wants to make but when capacity is limited, someone has to make it.
