Jamaica High School was a four-year public high school in Jamaica, Queens. It was once the largest high school in the United States. The majestic building was built in a Georgian Revival aka Colonial style, in 1929. With east and west wings, granite columns, and an elaborate bell tower, the building looks like a state capitol that had been dropped into the middle of a residential neighborhood. It covers 400 feet from east to west, and its three stories plus basement includes a 1,700 seat auditorium, a swimming pool, and two gymnasiums - in total, 625,000 square feet of space.
Due to high crime rates and poor academic performance, the school was closed permanently in 2014.
