Found by NatFletch on PS4.

By mashing the bottom right of the rear touchpad (R3 if on Console) you can go into first person before touching the lava which puts jak in an invulnerable state. The method seems to be a bit different on console versions requiring specific locations in the arena and menuing to allow for this to work.
