Native American Indians also wash their legs in the clear liquid from the fruit, which has an astringent effect. When the liquid is oxidized, skin dyed black. Dyeing is permanent, but only affects the outer layers of the epidermis. It can be found in Peru, Mexico, Panamá, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, Venezuela.
The unripe fruit yields a liquid used as a dye for tattoos, skin painting and insect repellent.
