It was built in the early 20th century, driven by the belief in the therapeutic benefits of the region’s radioactive waters. Legend says it was founded by a Spanish count, Dom Rodrigo, who brought his ill daughter for treatment in the local waters and, after her recovery, had the hotel built in gratitude Opened in 1926, the hotel had around 90 rooms and could accommodate 150 guests. It offered treatments such as thermal baths, mud applications, and radioactive electric compresses. In 1929, the operation was leased to Sociedade Águas Radium, Lda., until 1940. After World War II, the popularity of radioactive waters declined due to the associated health risks, leading to the suspension of activities in 1945 In 1951, the Companhia Portuguesa de Radium, backed by English capital, attempted to revitalise the hotel but was unsuccessful. The complex was auctioned in the 1960s and bought by Ramiro Lopes, who planned to transform it into a luxury hotel.
