Former President S R Nathan was a really warm and kind-hearted person, a feeling that I'm sure is shared mutually by everyone who knew him. I'm not saying this just because he was a former President, but it is because one can truly feel that he spoke from the heart.
The last time I met the former President was at the British High Commission here in Singapore. By that point, he had already stepped down from his post, but nevertheless he was still very approachable, and he even remembered me from previous encounters. I remember him asking me how I was doing since he had presented me with the HSBC Youth Excellence Award. The way he interacted with other people and his demeanor, really made him one of my biggest personal inspirations.
President Nathan, thank you for all your contributions to the nation. Your civil service has changed the lives of many, and I have utmost respect for your work. You will be dearly missed sir; may you rest in peace.
