A Draken in the flesh... What a treat! :D
Nowadays it's extremely rare to come across one of these that is still airworthy, so it was truly amazing to be able to witness and capture this Swedish Air Force Historic Flight of the J 35J Draken at Dala-Järna during Flygfesten 2022. A true gem of ages past!
Of course the Draken is no longer in active service but a few units have been kept and maintained in flight condition so we can still delight in their presence on the air! :)
Sadly, the plane had to come from a faraway base so it had limited fuel on board, leading to the display being very short... just a couple of minutes of high speed loops and flybys. :'(
It also caught me off-guard so I was unprepared and the video came out a bit shaky, but it is what it is... still managed to capture a few cool shots nonetheless! :D
Flygfesten is a big airshow in Europe, attracting around 50.000 attendees. Flygfesten is an eventful weekend with world class pilots and airplanes. Flygfesten has been organized every three to four years since the re-launch in 1986. It is held in Sweden by Västerdalarnas Aero Club, located in Dala-Järna in Vansbro municipality, with about 7000 inhabitants.
Although the air show is the major focal area, Flygfesten aims to make the show more than just a regular flight display but a festival, where Saturday’s and Sunday’s air show are complemented with evening entertainment during Friday and Saturday night in the form of dance, rock, disco and fun fair.
Flygfesten is a non-profit arrangement and is held to promote the activity of the club in particular and to aviation in general. It offers a good forum for aviation enthusiasts to meet other like minded, while it is a fine opportunity for the Club to recruit new members.

The Saab 35 Draken is a Swedish fighter-interceptor developed and manufactured by Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (SAAB) between 1955 and 1974. Development of the aircraft started in 1948 as the Swedish air force future replacement for the then also in development Saab 29 Tunnan dayfighter and Saab 32B Lansen night fighter. It featured an innovative but unproven double delta wing, which led to the creation of a sub-scale test aircraft, the Saab 210, which was produced and flown to test this previously-unexplored aerodynamic feature. The full-scale production version entered service with frontline squadrons of the Swedish Air Force in 1960.
The Draken is known for its many "firsts" within aviation. It was the first Western European-built combat aircraft with true supersonic capability to enter service and the first fully supersonic aircraft to be deployed in Western Europe. Designwise it was one of, if not the first, combat aircraft designed with double delta wings, being drawn up by early 1950. The unconventional wing design also had the side effect of making it the first known aircraft to be capable of and perform the Cobra maneuver. It was also one of the first Western-European-built aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight.
The Draken functioned as an effective supersonic fighter aircraft of the Cold War period. Even though the type was designed and intended as an interceptor, it was considered to be a very capable dogfighter for the era. In Swedish service, it underwent several upgrades, the ultimate of these being the J 35J model displayed in this video. By the 1980s, the SAF's Drakens had largely been replaced by the more advanced Saab 37 Viggen fighter, while the introduction of the more capable Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter was expected in service within a decade, although delayed. As a consequence of cutbacks and high maintenance costs, the SAF opted to retire the Draken during December 1999. The type was also exported to the air forces of Austria, Denmark and Finland.
