The increasing diversity and complexity of Digital Musical Instruments opens new opportunities for electronic musicians. However, it also makes electronic performances less and less accessible to the audience. They can't rely on physical properties of the instruments, and musicians' impact on the sound is almost impossible to perceive.

The goal of the IXMI project is to use mixed-reality displays and 3D interfaces to augment Digital Musical Instruments in order to reveal their inner mechanisms and the engagement of musicians during performances.

It is composed of :
A novel approach and software called Rouages
Novel mixed-reality display technologies
The study of perception of performances with Digital Musical Instruments

This project is conducted at the University of Bristol by Dr Florent Berthaut in collaboration with Prof. Sriram Subramanian, Dr Diego Martinez Plasencia and Hannah Limerick. External collaborators are Dr Martin Hachet (INRIA Bordeaux), Dr David Coyle (University College Dublin) and Dr James Moore (Goldsmiths, University of London).
