We drove hours to Spokane to see what we could do to help — arriving right as evacuation zones started lifting. What we found: 921 structures destroyed, 65,000 people evacuated, and devastation through suburban neighborhoods unlike anything I've seen in 20 years around wildland fire.
This is the real, honest account of what it's actually like trying to help in the early days of a disaster this size — the bureaucracy, the waiting, why we didn't bring equipment, and why that was the right call. Also: a shoutout to the local boot companies who showed up for firefighters and residents alike, and an update on my son Jack, who's currently on shift on a fire that flared up badly last night.
