The Greene Space at WNYC & WQXR | Ivan Thompson Performs James Weldon Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing @GreeneSpaceNY | Uploaded February 2023 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
To celebrate Black History Month, we’re highlighting clips from our archival programming that present the experiences of the Black community and celebrate Black icons in music and art.
James Weldon Johnson, a man of many talents, was a distinguished lawyer who served as the executive secretary at NAACP and campaigned for a federal anti-lynching bill, fought against voter disenfranchisement in the South, and composed over 200 songs. His most famous song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” is a source of strength for those fighting for social justice and is known as the “Black National Anthem.” Enjoy this performance by Ivan Thompson from our event in Green-Wood Cemetery inspired by the poetry of James Weldon Johnson, who is buried at Green-Wood.
